Alava Provincial Council promotes sustainable mobility to get to work with 70 new secure bicycle stands in Gamarra, Jundiz and Iruña de Oca

Alava Provincial Council continues to promote actions to improve sustainable mobility to get to work with the installation of new secure bicycle parking areas in Gamarra, the Jundiz industrial estate and in Iruña de Oca.
The new bicycle stands are part of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project within the C.4.3 Sustainable, healthy mobility action, and join those already in operation in Amurrio, Ayala and Laudio, close to the train stations.
The one located in Gamarra has a capacity for 50 bikes and will enable sustainable mobility to be fostered, addressing the growing demand for these services in work environments. This infrastructure has solar panels to guarantee its autonomy and energy efficiency, and also allows users to charge electric bicycles.
10 stands are available at the Júndiz bicycle parking area. These are joined by a further 10 stands in Iruña de Oca. The action has been rounded off with the installation of a bicycle cleaning and repair point associated with the Zadorra green route in Krispijana.
During the presentation of the new facilities, Amaia Barredo, the Provincial Councillor for Sustainability, Agriculture and the Natural Environment, explained that "a total of one hundred parking stands have been provided by the Provincial Council to reinforce secure parking and electric recharging for people who use bicycles as a means of transport".
In this respect, Barredo emphasised that "these stands foster and promote the connectivity of urban areas with industrial estates through cycle routes, so that we move towards sustainable mobility in daily journeys, while stimulating a healthier lifestyle".
These secure parking stands are made of aluminium and polycarbonate, a very strong, non-deformable material that protects against vandalism and adverse weather conditions. Users will have to register on a mobile phone app that will generate a code to use the secure bicycle stands.
The Gamarra and Jundiz bicycle stands will be available on the VGbiziz network: Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council's network of secure bicycle parking stands, which can be accessed by typing in the user code.
The Provincial Council has allocated an investment of €211,668.69 (VAT included) for this project, which is co-financed by the LIFE programme.
This service has been implemented as a result of a study on electric mobility, specifically by bicycle, to connect urban areas to industrial estates via the existing green routes of the Nervión Linear Park and the Zadorra Green Route, carried out in 2021. This study analysed everyday mobility in order to identify strategic areas that could be used for sustainable mobility and detailed the locations of secure bicycle racks with electric charging points.
