Alava Provincial Council to install parking facilities for bicycles and a cleaning module on the Zadorra Green Route
01/08/2023
The bike racks will be located in Vitoria Gasteiz, Gamarra and Jundiz, and a third one in Iruña de Oca.
These are in addition to those already in operation in Amurrio, Ayala and Laudio and close to the train stations.
The Department of Sustainability, Agriculture and Natural Environment of Alava Provincial Council continues to promote actions to improve sustainable connectivity to work environments using bicycles. To this end, it will install secure parking facilities for bicycles and a bike cleaning unit on the Zadorra Green Route. This action is part of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, specifically action “C.4.3 Sustainable mobility, reduction of emissions and healthy lifestyle”.
It is the result of a study on electric mobility, specifically by bicycle, to connect urban areas to industrial estates via the existing green routes of the Nervión Linear Park and the Zadorra Green Route, carried out in 2021. This study analysed everyday mobility in order to identify strategic areas that could be used for sustainable mobility and detailed the locations of secure bicycle racks with electric charging points.
Two of the bike racks will be located in Vitoria Gasteiz (Gamarra and Jundiz), with a third one at Iruña de Oca. These are in addition to those already in operation in Amurrio, Ayala and Laudio and close to the train stations. The Provincial Councillor for Sustainability, Agriculture and the Natural Environment, Amaia Barredo, said that “the goal is to encourage and promote the connectivity of urban areas to industrial estates via existing cycle routes and is a priority for the department. We need to move towards sustainable mobility in everyday travel while encouraging a healthier lifestyle. We will continue to build a region that is a benchmark for using bicycles, connecting points with the greatest flows of people, such as workplaces, through infrastructures that provide a service for cyclists”.
Once the new facilities are up and running, it will be possible to store between 10 and 53 bicycles per secure parking space, depending on models. These secure parking spaces are made of aluminium and polycarbonate, a very strong, non-deformable material that protects against vandalism and adverse weather conditions. Users will have to register on a mobile phone app that will generate a code to use the secure bicycle racks. Users will have to enter their user code to access the interior of the units.
The investment allocated for supplying, installing, commissioning, maintaining, upkeep and full management of the bike racks and the cleaning module is 211,668.69 euros, including VAT.
