Bizkaia Provincial Council highlights the actions of Urban Klima 2050 as part of its green-blue infrastructure plan

Actions include the recovery of the Tonpoi natural space (Bermeo), the adaptation of the Estepona River (Bakio) and the application of nature-based solutions in Punta Zorrotza (Bilbao).
In its pursuit of achieving climate neutrality by 2050, Bizkaia is working on the design and development of the green-blue infrastructure plan, an ecological network that integrates natural and semi-natural areas and other environmental elements to contribute to improving the environmental quality of the region and the landscapes that form part of it.
This was explained by Carlos Garrido, a technician from Bizkaia Provincial Council’s Department for the Environment, on the Onda Vasca podcast devoted to environmental sustainability. "This is an investment in the future of ecosystems that promises to contribute to the territory’s adaptation to climate effects," he said.
Among the actions set in motion, Garrido highlighted those developed within the framework of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, of which the provincial institution is a partner. More specifically, Garrido referred to the recovery of the Tonpoi natural space in Bermeo, which has enabled the regeneration of a degraded area where a peri-urban green infrastructure has been designed with natural materials under sustainable gardening criteria. He also highlighted the adaptation of the Estepona River in Bakio, which will increase the river's resilience to the threats of climate change, recover the degraded natural space and develop recreational areas. Thirdly, he referred to the urban development project in Punta Zorrotza (Bilbao), designed to recover this space in a sustainable way through a mixed-use area for both housing and economic activity.
