Ihobe joins forces with EiTB to offer a comprehensive view of the effects of climate change on the Basque coastline

09/07/2024

The Basque Government's public environmental management company, Ihobe, will visit 10 towns along the Basque coast to give a comprehensive view of the impact of climate change on the Basque coastline.

As a result of the collaboration with EiTB's Surfing360 experience, citizens will have the chance to learn about the tools that Ihobe has made available to them to calculate their carbon footprint, find out their level of commitment to climate change and adopt new daily habits that will help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Ihobe’s Klima360 awareness-raising campaign will begin in Zarautz on Wednesday July 10 and will then go on to visit other towns and cities in the Basque Country: Orio (July 12), Getxo (July 18), Zarautz (July 24), Ulibarri-Ganboa (July 27), Zurriola - Donostia (August 4), Mundaka (August 10), Hondarribia (September 7) and, with new locations still to be confirmed, will conclude on September 20 in San Sebastian for the 72nd edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Ihobe's Klima360 campaign

The Ihobe campaign proposes 5 “EKO gestures” under the slogan ‘Eman bostEKOa!’, which are aimed at changes to mobility, air conditioning, waste reduction, consumption and responsible tourism that contribute to respect for the territory at a time of the year that highlights the role and benefits of natural environments on the coast for citizens.

The Basque Government's public environmental management company has set up a microsite – ihobe.eus/klima360 – to showcase a range of tools, instruments and applications that contribute to climate action by the general public. Ihobe will reward people's commitment based on their “EKO gestures” and will raffle a whale-watching trip and other prizes for the best proposals made by participants for daily practices.

According to data available in Ihobe's Kostaegoki viewer, the sea is projected to rise by 26 cm by 2050, and sea levels are expected to rise by between 51 cm and 1 m by 2100. This would mean losing about 20% of beaches by 2050 and 40-60% by 2100. Moreover, the increase in potentially flood-prone areas will affect 15,000 people by 2050. Scientific evidence has proven the impact climate change has on our coastline, and the need to mitigate emissions and push measures to adapt the territory to cope with the expected effects in the Basque Country. Ihobe is contributing to climate action through projects such as Life Urban Klima 2050 and Regions4Climate, in which actions are carried out to adapt the natural environment to preserve beaches, vegetation and marshes, which protect us from the impacts of the sea.

Surfing360

The Surfing360 adventure, which is available on the PRIMERAN platform, is a programme presented by Xabi Lopez featuring waves from around the world. Recorded in virtual reality, each episode offers the possibility of interacting with the images, making this a spectacular experience.

Ihobe's awareness-raising campaign includes prizes for people who make specific commitments and is a complementary action within the EiTB Surfing360 experience, which will make it possible to enjoy the best waves in the world on a television programme thanks to an augmented reality experience. The overall view of this attractive audiovisual initiative set on the Basque coast is an excellent opportunity to get the public to commit to preserving an environment that is particularly sensitive to the effects of climate change.
