The Basque Country expands its list of clean technologies to accelerate the energy and climate transition

17/01/2025

The Basque Government has issued a new order updating the List of Clean Technologies in the Basque Country, the acquisition of which results in a 30% deduction of the investment cost of the equipment from the corporation tax liability.

The Basque Government has updated the List of Clean Technologies in the Basque Country, a fiscal instrument that encourages efficiency in production processes by implementing equipment with better environmental performance in the Basque production base, making it a key element in making progress towards achieving the objectives of energy transition and climate change in the territory.

This stems from the joint work carried out by the public entities Ihobe, Spri and EVE, in collaboration with the Basque Tax Authorities and the Tax Coordination Body of the Basque Country. Financial institutions, technology providers, tax consultancies, business associations and companies themselves have also been involved. The aim of inter-agency collaboration is to accelerate the path to green transition in the most efficient way possible for companies.

Chapter VI, Article 58 of the Energy Transition and Climate Change Law sets out the promotion of techniques and technologies for controlling energy, reducing emissions and adapting to climate change. This list is also in line with the provisions of Article 85 of the Law 10/2021, of 9 December, on Environmental Administration in the Basque Country, which provides for the approval and regular updating of such instruments.

The list has been configured as a dynamic tool that will be updated periodically to incorporate the latest technological innovations that will allow the Basque Country to comply with its climate commitments. It is also a key fiscal instrument that makes it easier to identify sustainable investments and provides access to tax deductions for initiatives that are in line with climate and energy objectives.

Technologies that accelerate the climate transition

The technologies included in this list are aimed at:

Among the technologies included are those linked to the electrification of transport, the generation of photovoltaic energy, carbon capture and storage, and improvements in industrial processes to reduce their environmental impact.

A commitment to innovation and sustainability

By approving this list, the Basque Country has strengthened its position as a leader in the fight against climate change and promoting sustainable technological innovation. The list will also serve as a guide for companies, public administrations and other actors that would like to implement technological solutions in line with climate and energy objectives. Moreover, it marks a step forward in the collaboration between the public and private sectors, and encourages the mobilisation of resources for sustainable projects.
