Txinbo Park in Zorrotza will improve its integration with the River Cadagua using nature-based solutions

25/02/2026

This action, which is part of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, will improve ecological connectivity with the river by means of natural platforms and the recovery of the riverbank and will reduce the flooding risk when the river level rises.

Bilbao City Council will carry out work to improve the landscape and environment in Txinbo Park in the Zorrotza district, in order to improve its integration with the River Cadagua and reinforce the area’s climatic resilience.

This plan is part of action C.4.1 “Nature-based solutions and their co-benefits” of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, which promotes the implementation of nature-based solutions to help urban spaces adapt to climate change and generate additional environmental, social and economic benefits.

The project will physically and visually open the park towards the Cadagua riverbed by installing staggered wooden platforms that will allow the progressive approach to the river and the creation of new resting areas. It will also improve and renaturalise the riverbank by planting native vegetation, and will adapt the river environment.

From a technical point of view, the intervention will help to increase the ecological permeability of the area, promote the recovery of the natural functions of the river ecosystem and reduce the impact of possible flooding. The controlled extension of the contact between the park and the river will strengthen the adaptation of the urban environment to future climate scenarios.

In addition to its environmental benefits, the project will generate social co-benefits by increasing the public use of the green space and strengthening the relationship between the Zorrotza district and the river, consolidating the role of green infrastructure as a strategic climate adaptation element of in the urban environment.

Bilbao City Council has just put these works out to tender with a budget of €273,730 including VAT. Once awarded, the works are expected to be completed in two and a half months.
