Urban Klima 2050 analyses the project's progress and plans its final phase with the Technical Committee

The partner organisations have been analysing the progress made in terms of actions and new opportunities for collaboration moving towards the end of the largest climate action project in the Basque Country in 2026.

On 4 November, the Technical Committee of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project held a meeting attended by representatives of the 23 partner organisations. It provided an opportunity to review the technical and administrative progress of the project, take stock of the work carried out and define the next steps for the final stage of its implementation.

The meeting saw the final amendment of the project, an extension to the LIFE agreement meaning Urban Klima 2050 will keep running until 31 December 2026. This extension will ensure that a number of technical actions that have required planning and budget adjustments will reach a successful completion.

The main amendments concern actions of a technical and demonstrative nature, including those focused on renewable energies, adaptation in coastal areas, education and citizen science and climate governance. These changes strengthen the innovative and replicable nature of the project, and consolidate local involvement in new initiatives such as the network of climate shelters in Gernika.

Every action leader presented the progress made in their respective areas, highlighting the progress in integrating climate change into urban and territorial planning, developing nature-based solutions in urban, river and coastal environments, as well as actions on sustainable mobility, communication and raising awareness.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to take stock of the project as a whole (reflected in an average satisfaction rating of 8.2 out of 10 by the partner organisations), share the main achievements and challenges, and explore new opportunities for collaboration between the partner organisations. Finally, the next administrative and financial milestones were defined, including the technical justifications for the actions ending in 2025 and the preparation of the closing event planned for the end of 2026.

Urban Klima 2050 is led by Ihobe, the Basque Government's public environmental company, and is the largest climate action project in the Basque Country. Its aim is to implement the Basque Country's energy and climate plan and make the territory resilient to the effects of climate change.
