Urban Klima 2050 sets out its plan to empower citizens in climate change at a sustainable education seminar

At the 'Climate Education: Sustainability in Action' seminar, organised by UN Etxea, in conjunction with the Basque Government's Ministry of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment, and BBK Klima.
The LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 has unveiled its plan to empower citizens in climate change to different stakeholders during the 'Climate Education: Sustainability in Action' seminar on 1 December, organised by UN Etxea, in conjunction with the Basque Government's Ministry of Economic Development, Sustainability and the Environment and BBK Klima.
During the session, Malake Muñoz Cachón, head of the Climate Action projects at Ihobe, outlined the plan to empower citizens to foster climate awareness and the step to action by facilitating change through training and designing new tools. The actions included in the plan are related to areas such as responsible consumption, sustainable mobility and other natural urban elements.
According to Muñoz, the target audience was defined in order for the plan to be drawn up correctly, as “climate change does not have the same impact on everyone”. On the one hand, the analysis established that "the Basque Country has an empowered population in terms of climate action, that is fully aware of the importance of climate change mitigation and adaptation", and, on the other hand, "citizens need to be encouraged to progress towards environmental conduct such as more sustainable and efficient mobility, or more responsible consumption".
The strategy has 5 targets, namely,:
- PROVIDING objective and accurate information on the climate reality, its causes and consequences
- COMMUNICATING specifically and on a bespoke basis so people feel engaged
- AWARENESS RAISING of the importance of taking action
- EDUCATING in values and knowledge to foster a critical attitude and the transformation of habits
- FOSTERING CITIZEN PARTICIPATION IN CLIMATE DECISION MAKING
- CHANGE OF CONTEXT to facilitate individual or collective climate action
The targets included in the plan will be implemented by means of 29 actions that have already begun to be deployed in 2023 and will continue over the coming years
