Zarautz calls for tenders to reinforce the seawall due to the impact of climate change

18/03/2026

The action is part of the seafront adaptation measures within the framework of the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project and seeks to reduce the risk of flooding and damage caused by waves and the rising sea level.

Zarautz Town Council has launched the tender process to reinforce the seawall of the beach, a key action to increase the protection of the urban seafront due to the effects of climate change. The project foresees investment of around €3.8 million and interested companies must submit their tenders by 30 March 2026.

The project will raise the seawall by approximately 158 metres in order to reduce the risk of flooding and wave damage during storms. The action seeks to increase the protection capacity of the seafront promenade and the buildings and activities located on the seafront.

The project also includes the demolition of part of Plaza Munoa, which will enable this urban space to be reconfigured and facilitate the adaptation of the seafront to the new climate scenarios.

A pilot action within the framework of Urban Klima 2050

The adaptation of the seawall is part of the pilot actions being developed in Zarautz within the LIFE IP Urban Klima 2050 project, which seeks to increase the resilience of urban areas in light of climate change.

In this context, the project analyses different alternatives to adapt the town's urban seafront, especially in the Narros-Munoa stretch, in order to reduce vulnerability to waves and rising sea levels.

Over the past few years, technical studies have been carried out along with citizen communication processes to present the possible coastal protection solutions and to gather input on the measures to be implemented.

The KAIA committee has also played an important role in this process, as a space for collaboration between administrations, technical agents and other agents involved in the management of the coastline, which works to foster shared solutions for climate adaptation in Zarautz.
